I think the reason it is relatively better to hit with 54D-44 than with 43D-44 is simple: Opp cannot hit back on her 9pt with aces.
Snowie and Gnu seem to agree closely on this relative effect (swing of .035 vs .036), but not on the degree to which it is right or wrong to hit.

43D-44 [B R1 D2] 31k
54D-44 [D B37 R49] 5kGnuBG
43D-44 [B R16 D20] 15k
54D-44 [D B16 R24] 15k[Nactation Key: B = Both 24/20(2) 13/9(2), R = Run 24/16*(2), D = Down 24/16* 13/9(2). Error sizes are listed in thousandths.]
As you can see, for 43D-44, Snowie's rollout has the three plays essentially tied: R is -.001 and D is -.002. The truth is probably in the middle, somewhere between Snowie's and Gnu's rollout results.
Once upon a time, I played 43D-44D (hit and 9pt) against a guy nicknamed "Whitey," and as part of his typical running diatribe he smirked, "Ah, the weakie play!" (not that he would have known, but for some reason this remark made an impression on me).
At the time, I had just started learning backgammon and Go -- he was beating up on me. I'm happy to say that I later got my revenge at both games, even when I was playing White against Whitey :)
