BIG tournament thought experiment

1. I would think of one division only. There is no point in having 3 or 4 divisions. There is ONE main event at the WSOP, there is ONE race in Formula one, there is ONE soccer world cup.
2. I would change the format and skip consolation and last chance. The main would be a combination of round-robin, swiss and knockout. Something interesting enough for the better players, but still giving the opportunity to cash to a weaker player. That matches better the nature of the game which is a combination of skill and luck.
3. IŽd schedule it in a way to offer a main event over 3-4 days with a scheduling that avoids long waiting on matches to finish (each round scheduled at a certain time)
4. IŽd offer a lot of side action on the following days and only for players out of the main event and cover all ascpets of the game (doubles, speed, sassan, nack, etc.)
5. Last and more importantly, if backgammon was as popular as poker, IŽd try to bring as much sponsorship as possible and attract money, to be used for the prize pool, a top notch staff and equipment, as well as for TV and other promotional tools.
