Am I willing to give opp a good chance at playing a 20-point holding game? No. 13/5*.
Now, do I cover the 5-point, using up both remaining fours, or cover the 4-point and have another four to play with? I first need to decide what I'm going to do with that last four if I play 8/4.
5/1* seems to be the answer, as I put the second opp checker on the bar. I have the better homeboard which is an important component in the decision. 5's and 7's cover from the homeside (if not hit back) -- 19 numbers, plus 3-3, 4-4, 6-6 from the midpoint for a total of 22. I like the better chances of White having at least one staying on the bar after this play.
Is this play overkill (in terms of cube usage)? I don't think so, as I still have two checkers on the 24-point to get around.
That's my OtB thought process. Of course if it's really this easy of a play, Stick wouldn't have posted it.
13/5*, 8/4, 5/1* (or more commonly annotated 13/5*/1*, 8/4).
