Chiva, please explain format

In Response To: Chiva, please explain format (neilkaz)

The new format will divide the players into 4 groups of x players (random draw who enters in which group). There will be a modified swiss format in each group (itīs the same format I run in Munich and itīs fantastic). Each winner of a group will advance to the semi-finals which will be a knockout.

There are several reasons for that:

The new format will be appealing to many players. One can lose 2 matches and still win the whole tournament. Only 4 prizes will be paid, hence more money to the winners. Everybody will be busy during 2 days, and everybody except 4 players will be free for side-events on the last day. The point system which will be in effect for the WBGT (and the US Open being part of it) will favorize the US players to collect more points and make up for their disadvantage to travel to Europe and Japan to compete on more stops. I can run a satellite (32 players @ $100 and/or 16 players @ $200) towards the final of WBGT on the last day and bring not only the US Masters champion, but also one additional player to the final of WBGT. I will deduct $3k from the prize pool of the Masters to pay for seat of the winner at the WBGT final The Masters will be played and finished on the first and second day and prior to the start of the US Open on day 2. Preliminary rounds of US Open on day 2 + 3. Semis and final on day 4, as well as WBGT satellite. For those who already lose 3 matches in the preliminary rounds on day 2, I will have side events such as doubles, speedgammon, dmp-quicky, etc.

Each person is guaranteed 3 matches.

As an example for each bracket, letīs take a random number of players (8).

Each player draws a number 1-8 and he keeps that number.

Round 1: 1 vs. 5 / 2 vs. 6 / 3 vs. 7 / 4 vs. 8 Round 2: 1 vs. 6 / 2 vs. 7 / 3 vs. 8 / 4 vs. 5 Round 3: 1 vs. 7 / 2 vs. 8 / 3 vs. 5 / 4 vs. 6

Should a player already lose 3 matches, he is out for the competition and can enter side-events, etc...

That leaves an odd number of players in the group. His number (for example 8) is taken out and a we draw a number randomly from the remaining ones. That number (for example 2) sits out for the next round as the rotation in pairings continues.

The next round with an odd number of players will have the next number (in this case 3) will sit out.

At some point, some matches from earlier rounds might be repeated.

This goes on until 1 player remains and all others have 3 losses.

Depending on the number of players in each group, the match lengths will be defined. All matches will be clock mandatory.

This is perfect for any number going from 12 to 32 with 4 groups and 4 prizes.

It can be played easily with numbers going from 32 to 64 with 8 groups. The winner of each group will advance to quarters finals, semi finals and final. Prizes will be paid: Winner, finalist, semi-finalists and the 4 losers from the quarter-finals will play A vs. C and B vs. D for the remining 2 prizes.

In the unlikely event of more than 64 players in that division, we can have 16 groups. The winners will play again with the same system, divided in 4 groups, the winner of each group going to semis and final to cash. And the second of each group will play off for the remaining 2 prizes.

If more than 32 players, then probably 6 prizes...
