Works the same way for > 100? 24.5/106 = (24.5 - 6/4) = 23?

Yes, it does. This is the technique I've used for several years.

So if I end up with a takepoint calculation of 5.5/21 I do:

(5.5/21) * 5 = 27.5 / 105 27.5 * (100 - 105) / 100 = -1 1/4 or so 27 1/2 - 1 1/4 = 26 1/4

The correct answer is 26.2. Good enough for me, until I can estimate gwc to better then 0.1%.

As originally pointed out, the closer to 100 the initial stage, the more accurate the estimate. I think I've got the derivation printed out somewhere, if there's interest.
