Not so random 54 Rollout

I wanted to come off the anchor but Mochy & Michy convinced me to play 12/3.

What I saw was that we are very stripped and out of spares, points, and flex. However we have the stronger board and White has a blot so it seems like a good tactical opportunity to create some flex.

White rolled 32 and covered; we rolled 64 and broke the 8; he rolled 41 and made the ace; we rolled 41 and broke the mid and hit loose; he cubed; he rolled 16 and hit and made a 5 point board with two more of our blots loose; I somehow rolled well enough to win after that but thought we had probably made the wrong play with the 54.

White's attack is just too strong as almost every roll hits and makes a 4 or 4.5pt board, though we still have a return shot.

However compare with this also common situation where White's deuce is shifted to his ace point. White's rolls still play more or less the same making a 4 or 4.5 point board (albeit a weaker one). However, this is very close but running is marginally correct:

This breaks both Rich's rule #1 and rule #2. Perhaps it's time for rule #3?
