A tough one for me to explain

I don't have an explanation (yet). But, one of the things a player should always see is an opportunity to profitably leave blots in front of stripped points. Train your students to see this when looking for candidate plays. If you are going to be hit, you would like your opponent to sacrifice something when doing so. Strategic considerations often outweigh tactical ones. You still must consider what you are trying to accomplish in a position.
My eye immediately was drawn to 24-16. After the play, you will either have a good opportunity to escape both checkers or your opponent will have forfeited the outfield. This is my play in the absence of deeper analysis. I imagine that there is more to tell about this position and I look forward to reading what others see.
You may want to try adding a spare to opponent's midpoint while keeping the race the same to see if that changes the preferred play.
