"In my ideal world and on my list of things to do I'd create a test to hand out to all players who wanted to participate. This test would be long as fuck, taken perhaps over multiple sittings, and always in front of a monitor. (it may even be clocked!) It would try to cover as much of backgammon as it could but the scope of the test itself is limited in relation to live OtB backgammon. Still, if such a test were created it would be a great aid to narrow down who is or isn't the best and give insights to some players where their weaknesses lie."

I agree it would help. But there is a big difference between test taking and actually playing. For example would your test be able to measure how often a player misses a move OTB due to oversight? Not Fing the simple things is an important skill also.
