The dealer informed me that my call would stand unless there was an intervening bid prior to my turn. If that occurred, I could change my bid.

The rules vary from casino to casino, from tournament to tournament. While one rule is more accepted than another the way to handle it is still to address the dealer and ask if his out of turn action stands. You should never assume in these situations. Ask the dealer, if the dealer doesn't know call the floor. Normally out of turn actions stand but I'd still never act on that assumption.

As a side note, I'd drop the word 'bid' from your poker jargon.
