Scheduling Problem in Santa Fe

In Response To: Scheduling Problem in Santa Fe (Paul Weaver)

I think the long initial match, though I saw none of it, was probably much more a result of Larry's age and infirmities than anything else -- and I don't know how to best address the problem. I've played Ed any number of times, with and without a clock, and I consider him a player of average speed -- certainly deliberative when required, maybe moreso than most -- but certainly not what I would call a slow player. I suspect that Larry's focus, attention, and energy ebbs in a long, tiring, complicated match -- as I suspect this one was for him to take Ed to DMP (I believe) and then to win.

The unfortunate aspect of this circumstance is the age old problem discussed many times here previously -- the adverse impact to other players. Players have to wait inordinate lengths of times between matches, play at ridiculous post-midnight hours, and/or return in less than 8-9 hours to resume play -- w/o adequate time for meals, sleep, and calm. After that first match, all players in dependent matches were delayed, and players having to play in a direct bracket line were forced to play their matches on a clock -- through no fault of their own. I think all of these problems are resolved by having all matches clocked.

Neil and I played in the second round and, though I don't recall specifically, I suspect we finished by 4:15 or so (the aforementioned and discussed 8-cube did speed our match, though there were a number of prior games to reach 5-4). Neil's third round match probably did not start until 9:00 or 9:30. (Neil can correct any time estimation errors I've made). But, in my estimation, that delay is ridiculous. And, the participants in the delayed second round match took the entire 2.5 hour dinner break. It seems, as an example, any second round matches not completed by the beginning of the dinner break should be required to be finished by the end of the dinner break. It would be a tough rule but, in my opinion, it is better to compromise two parties (at least one of whom doubtlessly contributed to the problem in the first place) rather than penalize any number of others and the schedule of the entire tournament.
