While I think clocks are essential for doubles, doubles needs a completely different set of rules from singles.
What we really need is a word-counter.
After 45 words on a single play, you must play, and every time you say out loud what your opponent might do if you make that play, you must forfeit the match for coffee-housing.
Repeating a comment more than 4 times should be a forfeit. Making a comment about how good a roll your opponent just had should be a forfeit. Calling your opponents' bad rolls--forfeit.
Watching your opponent roll a great roll that gets him off the gammon, and then telling them how lucky they were not to be gammoned--forfeit. Whispering to your partner while the opponent's are playing--forfeit.
That's 130 words. You just forfeited your next two doubles matches, and will forfeit a third upon five more words. Shut your trap and play. =)
