It's easy to sneer, but move one checker from the defender's midpoint to the defender's 5-point (see diagram below) and the take decision is much closer. In other words, all the defender has to do is misjudge the race to think it might be takable. I don't think the cube decision is quite so obvious. Evidently Phil didn't either since he had to think about it.
