There are many things that didn't wash for me in the British English v. American English match-up. When I taught English in France even though it was English to kids there were still many things that came up that were very awkward. I was constantly telling the other non-native English teaching teachers "We (Americans) would never say that ..." and in a large amount of cases it was British English.

One of my favorite stories because it's uplifting when I'm having trouble with another language I only have to remember it. We took a trip to England, myself, the other English teachers, and the kids. I had no responsibility whatsoever and they were paying for my trip. The teachers were having an issue with exchanging money and I stood and watched for a few minutes while they went back and forth and the English weren't understanding what the teachers were trying to say. I finally figured it wasn't going to right itself and intervened. It took all of two sentences to convey the point they had been trying to get across. The French English teachers looked at me as if I had magic powers and they were so impressed. They were all very qualified to teach English it's just one of those things ... so any time I get too annoyed with myself not being able to construct thoughts or sentences in another language I remember it can happen to anyone that isn't a native speaker.
