I had never heard of tewari, but this is basically the same thing as transpositions in chess.
The concept of "tewari" is related to but both more subtle and specific than transposition, though there is an overlap. It is impossible to do it justice in one sentence, but tewari is a method of measuring or assessing the efficiency of moves (largely through transposition). In many situations, you can do something similar with chess, but not to the same satisfying extent.
To be fair to your comment, I was applying at least as much transposition as tewari in my 62 analysis of the backgammon position.
