Well, you could be right, in which case I will have learned a valuable lesson.

However, I have a hard time believing that failing to split, and getting more checkers sent back, will reduce my gammon losses. And I don't think that coming under the gun is especially dangerous here when our opponent has no new home-board points made and has not split his back checkers yet.
