Manning could have run a half-assed play immediately, which would be less likely to work and would take several seconds to run,
Note that spiking guarantees that the play won't work. In general you should be able to break even by throwing the ball away if nothing is open. Of course that takes a few seconds.
Indy was already so desperately short of time that most of their equity lay in the variations where they score on the first try, and most of the rest lay in scoring on the second try.
Also in an odd case where Manning is sacked or a tackle is made short of the end zone they still can burn a timeout and have 2 left.
I agree that it makes very little difference though.
