The quarter-final incident was reported to me privately by Christian who asked my opinion as organizer and TD. Since my name was brought up by Stick, I though Iīd add my official statement here, also to let people know how I will handle the case, should it ever happen on any of my tournaments.
1. I like te represent backgammon as a gentlemanīs game and I always make this very clear during a short speech before the games begin. I do not tolerate any kind of verbal or physical abuse. I understand that sometimes, there is considerable pressure due to the money on the line or a title, or valuable points towards a ranking and different people develop different behaviours under pressure.
2. As a TD, I am fully neutral. And I am not afraid to speak out sanctions against a misbehaving player, no matter who that player is. In the past, I have given penalty points to some of the Giants of the game and former World Champs (btw, they have accepted the penalties without any problem).
3. I expect the players to stop the clock and the game and to call the TD immediately, without leaving the board (have someone call for the TD if you donīt see him around). Donīt get intimidated, donīt try to be polite by keeping silent if something unapropriate happened that bugs you. Kindly ask your opponent for patience, stop the clock and the game and call for the TD. This is the only way to sort out problems. Nothing can and will be done retroactively.
4. I will listen to both sides of the story
5. In this case (verbal abuse), I will impose a short break in order for both players to cool dowm. I will ask them to sit down at the table. I will give the abusing player an official warning, demand that he apologizes to his opponent and ask both of the players to finish the match in complete silence and make clear that any infraction will be penalized.
6. I will have someone from the staff or myself, or any other appointed player of my choice (neutral and not close to any of the 2 players) to monitor the match.
7. Should infraction of the silence take place, I will hear the monitoring "official" and penalize, with match points, up to qualification.
8. Should the infraction of the silence rule be a repetition of harsh words and verbal abuse, I will disqualify the infracting player immediately and bar him from all other WBA tournaments (this has happened before once in 2004 and that player was never allowed to enter any of my tournaments since).
End of the story, no more headaches and a good lesson and warning towards all other players who, I am sure, will appreciate the friendly playing environment and the competition around a gentlemanīs game of backgammon.
