I don't blame Payton for not going for it, even if he knew it was probably right, on 4th and 2 from his own 31 yard line on the Saints opening drive. That is one that could get a coach, wrongly, dissed by everyone and inch him closer to future unemployment. Maybe the job-risk/gwc-reward was not worth it there. OTOH, I would have had great respect for him had he gone for it.

I think we will hardly ever see any go-for-it on 4th and xx on the wrong side of the 50 except in obviously hopeless situations, like down two scores with < 3 min to go. If you go for it and it doesn't work, the down-side of the incessant criticism won't be worth the trouble, even when the decision is clearly right. (Ask Belichick).

I think Chuck has told us in an even game, it is ALWAYS right to go for it on 4th and 1, regardless of where you are on the field.
