From the main forums page click on Set Preferences then I have Threaded List/Single Message/Newest First

So do I, and recommend these settings. And then, if I'm viewing the forum regularly, I also check "show messages posted in the last [2, 3, 4] days." If I'm viewing the forum less frequently, I check "show messages posted since my last visit." Either way, new messages aren't buried at the bottom of a very long list. That all works well for me.
