Hi Ken Larsen,

You, with Chuck’s help, have written a good and useful document but I think it tells the average player too much about the clocks which could lead to dire consequences.

As an organiser that owns 32 of these GameTime 2 clocks I’m not convinced about the advisability of players using the Save and Recall procedures because by doing so I can foresee players messing up the programming of clocks left, right and centre.

Setting 32 clocks to the 5 different U settings (that’s 160 settings that need to be checked) for the various different time controls that are going to be used during an event takes quite a bit of laborious time to achieve and I’m not best pleased when somebody messes up just one of my clocks. It only takes 1 clock to have been messed up to cause a problem in a match. During an event I (or staff) do not have the time to check the setting of every clock just before a match is played. I need to be able to hand out a U1, U2, U3, U4 or U5 pre-programmmed clock there and then and move on to dealing with the next player or whatever else needs my attention.

What’s wrong with just having a “MATCH IN PROGRESS” sign over the table and clock (players having of course paused the clock by either levelling the plungers or pushing the Play button to Pause and having written down their remaining time before departing on their break)?

The very fact that you’ve found the need to go to the trouble of writing a detailed document outlining how to program clocks in itself says that it is not such an easy task to program a clock correctly. Just because the clock is equipped with a function this does not mean that it is actually desirable to use said function.

Basically I don’t think players should be touching with the Change -, Change +, Select, Verify or even the On / Off buttons because the chances of them screwing them up and thus causing havoc are too vast. Apply Occam's razor. Players should only use the plungers and the Pause / Play button. If we let every Tom, Dick and Harry loose on the Select etc. functions, yes, we will witness an increase in (valid) claims of "the clock isn't working properly" during matches. From very recent history we've learnt the hassle such claims cause.

By the way, no need for others to check one factor about Game Time 2 clocks; when dropped from a table onto a hard floor they do survive.
