Start/Control Panel/System and Settings/Power Options/Change when the computer sleeps ... and if you can't figure out what to do when you get there, better throw away the computer.

That said, in 1998 I was working in Hong Kong and was trying to use a PC in the back office to do Jellyfish rollouts. (Working on my as yet unfinished book on match play, come to think of it.) I set up a big batch to run overnight, and when I came to work the next day I found the system had gone to sleep leaving my work undone.

So I did the 1998 version of the above. Most of the office ran WinNT 4.0 (great OS!) but I think this booger might have been the only one on Windows 98 (or even Windows 95). Anyway, next day I came in and the PC was sleeping again.

The office was filled with techies - one guy had not one but two masters degrees in computer science. And I worked my way up the food chain, each one going into the control panel to do what I had already done. Finally, I reached the top. The number two guy in the operation, older brother to the guy with the two masters degrees (Paul himself dropped out of school to write a roulette program), rebooted the computer and went into the BIOS, where a whole different set of power options was overriding the settings in the control panel. Problem solved.

But I still haven't finished the book.
