Hello Ed,

I am very impressed with the fact that you sent out an e-mail requesting feedback regarding your tournament. This indicates to me that you sincerely want to find out how you could improve your tournament for next year.

I have played in dozens of backgammon tournaments over the last thirty-plus years, but this is the first time any tournament organizer has requested feedback from me and other participants. Thank you very much for asking for our input.

Two weeks ago, right after the tournament ended, there were many posts on Stick's Web site (www.bgonline.org) about your tournament. In case you missed them, here are the links to posts written by Neil Kazaross and me:

Neil Kazaross is currently ranked #5 on the Giant-32 list of the world's best backgammon players. He was #2 in 2005. He is widely respected not only for being a supurb player, but also for his character and integrity.

I am quoting below from Neil's post, "More and more I get frustrated with the delays caused by slow play and players wandering off for long breaks, showing up late for side events after dinner etc etc. As each tourney passes, and with nearly half of them having the same BS, I wonder why I keep playing. Anyhow, Santa Fe was the LAST time I EVER play a Championship level event without a clock. As for the future, if I haven't nearly retired from live play, in 2011 and beyond I seriously doubt that I will ever play a Champ level event that isn't clock mandatory."

As you can see, Neil was quite upset about the scheduling problems in Santa Fe. So was I. We both feel our chance of winning the tournament was unfairly diminished because we were both unfortunate enough to be in the section of the draw that was delayed by hours due to a very slow first-round match. We both feel that we were deprived of competing on a level playing field because of some serious mistakes that an experienced tournament director never should have made.

I may provide you with more detailed feedback in a couple of weeks.

Best wishes,

Paul
