I believe that the "rights" to the match records clearly belong to the 2 players involved, AND the tournament director, particularly if the director states in advance that he intends to keep and use the match files or films.

If tournament directors can help promote their events, make money on this, or even use it for future articles or books, good for them!

To me, the ethical (and possibly legal) questions arise when a third party wants to record a match and use that for his own profit. Should he have the permission of the players, the director, both, or neither? I honestly don't know the answer to that one, but I can tell you that presently, we are not talking about something that is worth much money (if any).
