Probably its fairly simple. There are no checkers on the bar, and unless we can put checkers on the bar, the 4 point will not by itself create gammons. It will however win games since it is a gap that must be filled and converting this position to a race and bearing in safely is the best way to win this game. Holding the 22 pt anchor somewhat limits gammon risk, even with 4 back. However, making the 9 point and blocking 6s creates awkward numbers for white and thus shots. Doing so sacrifices some wins for those shots. Get the shot, hit the shot, keep them back and on the roof if possible, win a gammon. Thats the plan here.
