I'll say the same thing to them that I say to myself. "It is quite important to know how to follow up the opening plays that you usually make." As an example, lets say that you usually build with 43 (43D). Lets assume that you aren't hit and don't have any very obvious play for 21 and 61 next turn, do you know how to play them?
How true.
In the excellent New Ideas in Backgammon (Woolsey/Heinrich), the very first problem in the book is 43D-42P-21 (see diagram below), where splitting and making the 9pt is definitely better than making the 7pt. I've assumed it's true for 43D-42P-61 as well, though I don't think I ever got around to rolling it out.
