In Response To: Saturday morning speech in Pittsburgh (Chuck Bower)

First the link to where Ray originally posted the incident:

I did not attend the award presentation nor the calcutta. Yes, I realize it's bad form for someone receiving one of the awards to not show up and for that I apologize. I would have liked to have been there, I like to attend most calcuttas, but it's always whether I need sleep or not that decides it. An extra two hours of sleep is massive for someone with a schedule like mine who is already getting screwed by having to get up and play before noon. That's my lame excuse for not showing, as I would have liked to.

On to the Ray speech of which I wasn't witness so can report nothing factual about it whatsoever. When I did actually make it down to the playing room it was all every last person could talk about so I expect it was quite the spectacle. Chuck presented it in a much lighter form than how it was told to me by several ppl. I was told by most it must have went on at least 20 minutes and it was accusatory diatribe about what had happened to him in the above linked incident. I was told he didn't name names but made it very clear who he was talking about.

Whether Ray is right or wrong about the incident I don't think matters. Certainly I believe he thinks he's right otherwise he wouldn't hold on to it so strongly. One tends to let things go a lot easier when they are unsure if they're right or not. It seems unfortunate that Ray chose the awards ceremony to ramble on as he did about the incident. I was told by quite a few ppl that is was one of the worst things for backgammon they'd ever seen and they were sickened by what all the new players there must have thought of Ray, the reigning American champ, after such a speech.

I don't know that any good can come from rehashing this speech but I'm always one for open discussion rather than sweeping it under the carpet. I don't know if Ray reads here anymore as I know he quit posting so I'll be sure to send him an email linking him to the thread in case he wants to clear anything up.
