Bobby Fischer is a good example to think about. I wonder what the effect would have been if his rabid anti-Jewish and anti-American attitudes had been in evidence during the period of his chess domination. Supposing he had refused to play chess unless he were allowed to rant on national television; should we have allowed it?
Obviously I am not saying that Stick's sleeping in is anything like Fischer's hate speech. And in general, I don't believe that the top performers in any field of endeavor should be held to higher standards of ethical behavior than anyone else. But at the same time I wouldn't hold them to lower standards either, even if one could make the case that their "bad behavior" improves their performance.
