In Response To: Congratulations to Al Faller (Chuck Bower)

Hi Bob...

as Chuck said correctly, 5 through 8 got the same cash prize. Al Faller got the final 8 spot by being the sole survivor of those who went 4-2, but that group had no chance at the top prize that the 1 through 7 finishers had a chance at starting play on Sunday morning.

Basically, there were 4 brackets of 16 (well, 15 in one since there were 63). Each bracket went for 4 rounds, and each bracket put through 1 player at 4-0 and 4 players at 3-1, so after 4 rounds 20 players went through, 4 at 4-0 and 16 at 3-1 for Swiss format.

So after one round of this, there were 2 at 5-0 and 10 at 4-1. So after this round Gregg and I were the only ones who cashed.

After the next round there was 1 at 6-0 (Gregg) and 6 of us at 5-1, so the other 5 joining me at 5-1 had also cashed at this point.

The other five at 4-2 were the ones playing for the final 8th place spot. Al Faller won that. He beat a pretty darn good lineup back to back to back on Saturday to get to 3-0 before losing to Cattanach, and he beat some pretty good players on Sunday too.

On Saturday he beat three giants or near giants out of the gate (O'Hagan, ??, Yep). I forget who his 2nd victim was but if I recall correctly it was somebody also pretty darn good. I'm thinking it may even have been Sax but I am not certain of this at all so my apologies if I got this wrong. I walked past his match with Yep that just started and saw that Faller gammoned him on a 4-cube in the first game of that match, and getting up 8-0 in a 9 point match is never a bad spot to be in.
