Anyone that attends many tournaments can tell you that slow play and the delays produced by slow play is a serious problem that hurts everyone.
So aside from pointing out that problems exist with clock usage and it is therefore not perfect (all true), what is your solution to eliminate slow play that does not involve using clocks? Or is it your position that there is no such thing as unacceptably slow play and tournament directors have no right to proactively impose any time limits whatsoever on players and that players should just stop complaining and play at 3 AM if that's how long things need to take?
It really amazes me that Chess - a game where it is understood that there will be protracted periods of deep thought saw fit to impose clocks to level the playing field and keep thinking time under control, and that it has since been universally accepted in the game. Yet backgammon - a game with a culture of rather rapid play has players that resist any attempt to level the playing field and limit the thinking time a single player may consume. Some argue that they don't want clocks to turn backgammon into chess. Meanwhile, allowing unlimited thinking time is exactly permitting some players to make backgammon just like chess - rather than the comfortably paced, action packed game that makes backgammon such a great game to play and watch.
Seriously, get out and play a bunch of clocked matches and see if clocks are still the demon you seem to think they are. I was reluctant at first and it made me rather uncomfortable the first couple of times and I felt rushed even though I was in no time trouble whatsoever. But I soon learned to relax and surprised myself and grew to like it and prefer it. You may surprise yourself too - if you give yourself the chance and keep an open mind.
