Re: The only provable long term-advantages are that promoters get to run a doubles tournament simultaneously with a main, and with a reduced staff.

Running two events at the same time (be they Singles, Doubles, SpeedGammon or whatever) is still going to be a tricky thing to do with or without clock play. This is because a player can only play 1 match at a time no matter what speed those matches are played at. Hence I dispute the first half of your statement.

Clock management does NOT equal a reduced staff. In fact quite the opposite is true. It is essential that every clock used (be they provided by the T.D. or by players) is correctly set. This alone often requires another member of staff. However clock play makes for a better experience for players so it is worth the extra staffing cost. Running a professional standard event costs more than running an amateur standard event. Hence I dispute the second half of your statement.

With all due respect Lenny, I fail to understand that you can argue against clock play if, as seems to be the case, you have not tried it. May I suggest that you try clock play with an open mind. In doing so get into the groove, the rhythm, the flow of clock play - if you try it while fighting against it you will not be giving yourself a chance to realise that it makes for a better match. This will probably take you an evening of play – 1 match is not going to enlighten you. By comparision how long did it take you, when you first learnt to play, to be equally comfortable playing clockwise and anti-clockwise? I bet that took you a few matches. The same goes for clock play. Rome was not built in a day. Then, having given clock play a fair chance, please review your current stance on the pros and cons of clock play.

Thank you.
