It just seemed odd that there was not enough time to play 11 point matches in the main event...

You have to realize that there needs to be 6 matches played on Saturday for everyone still alive, which is definitely more than a regular single-elim/consolation format. It is 8 or 9 matches to complete the event for the winners, not just 6 or 7.

If it was a regular single-elim I would have won the event by late Saturday night, collected the trophy and gone home :)
