You are right Neil. Clocks are not universally popular. Nothing is. I wish we didn't need clocks. If everyone would be courteous and play at a decent pace, they would not be needed. But experience has proven otherwise.
Give me 20 minutes to study every play and I will certainly play better, but I will also completely destroy my opponent's enjoyment of the game and I will ruin the tournament for many people.
I can list things about using clocks I don't like. But I can also list things I do like about using them, and the do's outweigh the don'ts by a huge margin. I am happy to say that the HUGE MAJORITY of tournament players agree...they want matches to move at a reasonable speed, and they want to be able to get to sleep at a reasonable hour and get up at a reasonable hour.
MOST people who hate clocks find their major objections disappear once they've gotten used to them. Myself, I am spoiled...now that I've played with a clock, I really don't like playing without it.
I feel the same way about the baffle box, by the way, but it's going to take longer for people to come around on that one because most people haven't used them enough yet. Once you get used to the baffle box, you feel uncomfortable playing without it.
