Your implication is that the fact that you are doing this on your own time more than compensates for whatever gamesmanship may be involved. I'm not saying I disagree with this. But it seems like, by the same logic, you ought to be able to idly fondle the cube on your own time as well.

Let's try a different one of Phil's hypotheticals: the one where you pick up your pen in an effort to induce the cube. Is this case distinguishable from the one where you reach for the cube in an effort to inspire a reaction? If not, should the next edition of the rules penalize capricious pen-handling?

Here's one more. The consensus around here seems to be that fast-rolling is annoying and that it's your responsibility to ensure that your opponent's dice are up before you roll. If the opponent reaches for his dice and then hesitates at the last minute to consider another play, and you roll, that's your fault for not waiting until the dice were up - or so the consensus seems to have it, in any event.

So let's say I want to know if my opponent will cube a particular candidate play, so I make the play and then pretend to reach for my dice to see if my opponent makes a move towards the cube. Is this any different from strategically reaching for the cube itself to inspire a reaction? Should the rules address this situation in any way?
