Ray, I do appreciate your efforts to explain your motives and what you were trying to say. I NEVER doubted the truthfulness of anything you said....and I don't think very many people questioned that. At the same time, I never questioned the honesty of the other people involved. I think BOTH SIDES could pass a lie detector test that they were acting on what they thought really happened.

The problem that I, and many others had was the public airing of such a negative, unfortunate situation. And it continues here with the posts in this thread.

The problem that I, and many others had, was that the No. 1 player in the game, and one of the strongest personalities in the game, and someone who has earned our respect not only as a player, but as a leader, had very little positive to say to the many people in the room, including many who had never come to a tournament before.

The problem that I, and many others had, was how inconsiderate it was for you to take it upon yourself to decide that Bill's awards presentation and Rob's opening ceremonies was to be used by you in this manner; and that you would use up so much valuable time that could have been far more enjoyable for all had you not done this.

EVEN IF you were absolutely cheated by some lying jerk who was backed up by lying friends, this was not the time and place to air this kind of problem.

But most of all, I was personally disappointed to see someone I have great respect for, who has and can do so much to promote and support tournament backgammon, use this platform in such a non-productive and negative way.

That you have taken the time to apologize some some of the things that you either said or were perceived to have been said is very big of you, and I really appreciate that you did that.

But let's put this to rest, at least publicly. I'm embarrassed that our European friends on this forum are hearing about such negativity in the U.S. For the most part, the better players and experienced players are truly good sports and honest, fair people. But that is not the impression anyone can get from this public airing of your peeves. And that is the impression given to new players in the room.

I know how much you love backgammon and want to see it grow and prosper, and you have done much to help in that regard. It's sad that you let your anger and emotions cloud your reasoning in this area. We OWE the tournament organizers and our fellow players to help project a positive, friendly, and all around good image of the game publicly. This is how we will grow the game and tournaments and attract sponsors.

As Chiva put it so well, it's time to drop the issue and the bickering that is going on publicly. If you are still unsatisfied about what happened, and you want to issue challenges and/or complaints to the people involved, do it privately. Let's put the overall good of the game first.
