"If a player is asked not to talk during the game beyond the necessary game talk such as "double" would the director enforce the request?"

Talking to excess while an opponent is trying to think would be covered under my categories of "annoying" and/or "incessant". But the amount of chat that is annoying is in the ear of the beholder I suppose. I would think that a player's desire for silence trumps his opponent's desire to make chit chat. Anything the director believes is a reasonable claim for annoying behavior (emphasis on "reasonable") should be banned on request. And I don't think a director should need to be called. A direct request to the player should simply be honored. That said, I don't think anyone should assume a desire for total silence. Backgammon is at heart a social game.
