I reject the idea that a player can do whatever they want as long as it is on their own clock time. If a player picks up the game cube along with the 3 other chouette cubes sitting about and begins to juggle them while his clock is running, I'd say he's not only doubled if his opponent wants to require that, but violated the intent of the rule regarding unambiguous actions. The clock and the clear delineation of who's action it is does not allow you to do things which are potentially confusing as long as it is your turn. As far as I am concerned, unlike moving the checkers to visualize the play, there is no reason to ever lift the cube and add confusion to the current state and position of the cube unless you intend to change that state and position. It is clear to me that even with clocks, if you lift the cube your opponent should have the option to require you to complete the act of doubling. That said, if lifting the cube is the magic act, the rules could clearly state that lifting the cube (or touching it if that is better) is what constitutes crossing the line and anything else short of that has no implied intent.
