Blue is far enough behind in the race that he has to hit and contain to win. If he plays safe now, he has a decent chance of hitting a shot later, but it looks like containment will be much harder down the road. He'll have given up his flexibility and White may have saftied one of his checkers by then. This means Blue will probably have to take additional risks to contain the hit checker.

If Blue gets away with hitting now, it looks like his long term risk goes way down. He may get both checkers dancing, allowing him to spread out and bring things home more easily. He could end up closing in on a racing cube or even win a gammon.

I think you're supposed to hit.
