the extra checker off doesn't help me unless I roll a 6 next turn, does it?

It helps a lot in the cases where you are hit. In a close race (between the take points) an extra checker off is worth around 10%. Now this doesn't always end up as a race, white may stay out long or get hit back in, or he may come in soon or even hit black on the way round - in which case the extra checker won't matter. But a fair amount of the time Black and white will pass each other making it a close race, so I think it is fair to guess that you get at least 5 percentage points added wins after being hit if you rip. Seeing that White is probably not a big dog after being hit, he increases his chances after hit by almost 10%, but increases his chances of being hit by only around 5%. Seems to be a good trade-off.
