And I am not certain but I suspect that chess has a higer youth% than backgammon.

It has to... when I was in 7th/8th grade, I participated in a Northern California Scholastic Chess tournament. There were, I dunno, 100-200 kids at these tournaments... maybe more -- it was played in a gymnasium, and it was pretty full. I remember it mostly for the camaraderie and the excitement of getting to take a weekend trip away from home. We played in the tournament, but also played basketball and other games between rounds. I was lousy at chess then, and I am lousy now, but it was really Good Times.

I distinctly remember one kid who wouldn't let me stop my clock so that I could summon a tournament director. I wanted to claim a draw based on repetition of position and he wouldn't accept a draw offer. It took me at least five minutes to get a director because we were playing in a side room, far away from the main playing room. My chicken scratch scoresheet couldn't prove repetition, so we played on. The director penalized my opponent something like two minutes for not allowing me to stop the clock (and didn't reset my time), and in the end, I was worse off on time than when I had started, so his stupid little ruse worked -- he knew the rule, because the director got him to admit as much. A short time later, he took the draw.

Oh, and yes, we played with clocks and with touch move.
