I know someone who routinely uses "the trick". He will do it against the best player in the club and the worst. He does it all the time. I have seen him throw away equity over and over and over using "the trick". It is generally a bad idea. Whenever you have ANY legitimate market losing sequences and you refrain from doubling, you are sacrificing equity. To gain it back you need to:
1. Reach a position from which you will double. This may involve sacrificing additional equity in many intermediate moves in which you refrain from doubling.
2. Your opponent must make a cube error.
This is a gambit. You sacrifice equity up front on purpose in hopes of receiving equity in return later. Your chance may never come. And if it does, your opponent may make a good cube decision depriving you of your reward. The more little errors you make before giving your opponent his chance to err, the bigger the mistake must be. Every time your opponent makes the correct decision, you have suffered a loss. When your opponent makes the wrong decision, you may or may not have suffered a loss anyway depending on how much equity you sacrificed to get to that point. It is very difficult to make "the trick" work like the ideal.
