9/3 8/4* leaves 1 more shot than 8/2 6/2. It also leaves a second blot, putting Blue in gammon danger.

On the plus side, hitting is better for the race, setting White back 4 immediate pips and putting him on the bar against a four point board. If White dances, Blue gets a direct shot at a second White checker, giving him some gammon threats of his own.

Clean up after 9/3 8/4* is easier. Blue leaves additional shots on 65 55 54 44 (the numbers change slightly, depending on whether White enters), compared to 65 63 62 61 55 54 53 44 33 after 8/2 6/2.

Cube ownership is important to Blue, since he will get to play until the end and occasionally cash even after being hit. Also, White's stripped board means he often has to break his board earlier in the bear off than he'd like.

I'd have played 9/3 8/4* over the board. After taking a deeper look, I'm not sure what's right, but I think the pros of hitting may outweigh the cons.
