There is no equivalent to Gnu's "Edit" button in XG. To set up a position in XG, click on the "Set up a position" button when you first launch it. If it is already running, use the menu options File/New/Setup position. You can then set up a position very similarly to how it's done in Gnu and Snowie, with buttons and options on the bottom of the screen that allow you to switch players, clear or setup all checkers, set match score, etc.
Unlike Gnu, you cannot easily switch between setup mode and play mode in XG. You can set up a position and perform evals/rollouts, but if you want to play a move or two, you need to select Play from position... from the Setup menu. If you then want to do some more editing, you need to setup the position again (as far as I know).
When I want to tinker with a position to study it in XG, I find it easier to open XG twice and use Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V to copy the position back and forth between the two windows. This is clumsy, but it allows me to "simulate" switching back and forth between editing and playing, a la Gnu's Edit button. Frankly, quite often I get frustrated with this and simply set the position up in Gnu. Maybe it's just a personal preference, but I find Gnu's more seamless approach to switching between editing and playing easier to work with.
