And Michael Strato and Kit Woolseys' comments there add perspective to Walter's. While Walter astutely notes one of the anomalies of Crawfordless match play (in his 2-away 3-away example, if the Crawford rule "rewards" reaching 1-away, Crawfordless play rewards reaching 2-away!), it seems that the "real reason for the Crawford rule" is to strike a balance between protecting the 1-away player, who can only use one point, and (Strato) affording the trailer a chance to catch up in a reasonable amount of time, perhaps (Woolsey) thereby merely being the player who got lucky last.
