Knowing when and how to split is one of the toughest parts of the game for me as well. I don't know what's best here, but here's my thinking.

I want to split now. My reasoning is that 1) White is ahead in the race, so the timing is likely to go Blue's way in a priming battle; 2) White has a stronger board, so it will be risky for Blue to hit loose; and 3) there's no time like the present. It's true Blue has attackers in place, but those same attackers will be used to equalize board strength, making it riskier for White to split next turn. This is a good splitting roll, so I split now.

I'd play 24/22 9/6. Splitting to the 22pt puts just as much pressure on Blue to perform as coming up to the 21 point, but it forces him to attack on a point he's not ready to make. If Blue makes his 3pt on my head, at least he's left with a gap in his prime. Also, since I'm expecting to get attacked, this split allows me to play 9/6, which I think is correct to minimize my exposure if things don't go well. 9/6 might look inflexible, but it's not bad at all. I still have a spare on the midpoint to play with, and an extra checker on the 6pt if often handy. Besides, flexibility isn't the top priority now, getting the back checkers moving so they don't get stuck is.
