I don't agree and I do agree. I don't think the opening books will matter much - having mastered that and playing against someone equally good except for the opening plays, what average edge do you have? 0.005 ppg or so?

But the problem I see is that the gains from additional study are relatively small. Let's say someone was previously ranked #20 of the world in terms of ER, studies hard, and mover up to #1 in the world. Playing a 15 point match against #50, what was the winning percentage before, what after?

I think that is the problem - BG players have become so strong at the top that luck almost trumps all.

An additional issue is that the Bots have taken away the possibility of self-delusion - any player can analyze his matches and figure out whether they are as strong as they believe or not.
