As far as I can tell, the match play performance is calculated looking only at each match and whether you won or lost the match. So if you play 50 matches then you're basically averaging just 50 numbers. In contrast if you look at PR then you're averaging over all the moves (or all the moves that matter), which is maybe 100 times more data points. Backgammon being primarily a game of luck (heh heh), you need a lot of data points to average out the random noise. I think that's why the match play performances you're seeing are all over the map.
