Well, I waited an extra day, but still just a couple of nibbles on what I think is an interesting position. Over the board, my initial reaction was to fill a gap in my board. But this is an unusual looking position, so I took the time to count how many shots I leave next turn:

* 10/8(2) 5/3(2) leaves 14 direct shots, 2 of which are double shots, and a stacked-n-stripped, awkward looking position;

* 6/2(2) leaves 8 direct shots and 4 indirect shots, and a position with evenly distributed spares;

* 6/4(2) 5/3(2) leaves 10 direct shots and 6 indirect shots, and a stacked-n-stripped, awkward looking position;

* 10/6(2) leaves 4 direct shots, and a position with evenly distributed spares. It doesn't fill any gaps, but about a third of the rolls next turn do, while the rest take checkers off.;

Wow, said I. What a huge difference. I can not only clear my troublesome outfield point and get all my men inside, but I can avoid leaving a bunch of dangerous shots next turn as well. Good thing I took the time to look ahead!

I was a bit surprised when XG told me that not only was my play wrong but that it was a whopper with cheese:
