The Case Against Rebuys

In Response To: The Case Against Rebuys (Phil Simborg)

I admit I hadn't looked into this much because I don't have plans to go this year but since there's another post about it let's take a look.

First off, the buy-in to this event is 580 euros and a 140 euro registration fee. Am I the only one who did a triple take here? Almost a 25% rake? Then if you rebuy/add-on it is 50% of your original total buy-in or 360 euros. Rebuys are allowed any time your stack gets under 5k chips and an add on, almost obligatory, is allowed just after level 4 completes. Also, since you start with only 2500 chips for your total 720 euro entry fee you in most cases should add on immediately raising your tally to 720 + 360. Assuming you're also going to add on when you make it that far, you've now reached 1480 in entry fees/registration fees. On the rebuys and add-ons you are only raked 8.5 so for the immediate rebuy and later add on it will cost you roughly 30 euros + for each time you do it. Praying my on the fly math is correct by entering the tourney, rebuying immediately as you most likely should, and adding on as of course you should when the time comes, you will have put up 1480 euros of which just over 200 went to rake.

Phil, I don't get #4 where you said:

4. Rebuys messes up the accuracy of a ranking system, as a player who is willing to spend more is more likely to win matches and tournaments and be ranked higher. In my opinion, even if a player is allowed to rebuy and win money and win a tournament, he should not be allowed to get the credit for his rating for any victories after rebuying. Points should not be "bought" but earned on a level playing field.

Is there a rating system dependent on the results of this tourney that I'm not seeing?

Backgammon is handicapped, it's a dice game. There's far too much luck involved and I don't feel guilty for one second if this format does favor the stronger player more than a normal format. I haven't given it much thought but if it does, so be it. I would feel bad about it favoring deep pocketed people but if you can't afford to rebuy or add-on then maybe you shouldn't be entering the tourney to begin with? People cried when Negreanu rebought 48 times at a $1k WSOP event in 2006 but that's what they signed up for. Would it make you feel better if there was a maximum cap put on the number of rebuys? That might be a compromise.

Stick ... looking to bowl Phil for cash.
