The Case Against Rebuys

Phil, don't think of the Riviera as a €720 tournament. It's not. It's a minimum €1,440 tournament -- and a case can be made for it being a minimum €1,800 tournament -- with the buy-in divided between an entry fee, registration fee, rebuys (one is practically mandatory) and an add-on (also practically mandatory). It's an expensive tournament, but there's nothing unfair about the structure. Similarly, I'd think of Chicago as a $480 to $600 tournament, including the $300 entry fee and as many rebuys as necessary.
Re Point 1, anyone thinking of playing in a rebuy tournament without making any would be wiser to stay home.
Re Point 2, unless added prize money is huge, players at the bottom of the seeding make a bad investment simply by showing up at every tournament they attend.
Re Point 4, the field at the Riviera and in Chicago is level for all who realize that the nominal entry fee is not the full cost of playing, and plan and rationalize their attendance accordingly.
Re Point Extra, frankly, I'd favor any number of improvements that would increase the chance that those who play best at a tournament win its prizes; the trick, of course, is to make such changes without convincing "lower-skilled" to discontinue donating to the prize pool.
