The Case Against Rebuys

I'm on board with everything Steve Mellen said.
Now, I should point out that I don't like a tournament structure that "compels" me to rebuy, because failing to do so is throwing away equity. I like the way Howard Markowitz does it in Vegas, where when you rebuy, you are doing so by buying out your equity in the Consolation and then starting over. Modulo rake, the rebuy price is exactly the right thing for that. All else being equal (and again, modulo rake), the decision to rebuy is just a question of how much of a junkie you are.
And yes, I like having the opportunity to take two cracks at winning the Vegas tournament, because I am not barnstorming the country entering scads of ABT events.
Ultimately, what's good for backgammon is having a variety of different formats. Single elimination with rebuys. Swiss. Double elimination with no rebuys. Different formats are good!
